The Secrets Behind Caitlyn Jenner's Hair, According to Her Stylist

There are plenty of things to like about I Am Cait, the E! reality series that chronicles Caitlyn Jenner's life. Not only does it help viewers better understand the transgender community, but it offers an intimate and personal look into who Jenner is and the way she wants to present herself to the world. While watching the show, we noticed that Jenner's hairstylist, Courtney Nanson, always seems to be by her side. We reached out to Nanson to find out how she became Jenner's trusted stylist and what the inspiration was behind Jenner's beautiful waves.

How did you start working with Caitlyn? "I was introduced to Caitlyn through a mutual friend around a year and a half ago. When the consultation was set up I didn’t know who I was meeting. Caitlyn soon introduced herself to me with a big hug and a big personal story. As she finished her story, I remember thinking how proud I felt in that moment. I knew that together we would create the perfect look."

How did you create her look? "We would both tear out magazine pages and send texts of colors and styles we liked. It was also a dream scenario because I got to spend a lot of time with Cait prior to her debut. It was very important for me to really get to know her on the inside and out. I needed to know what type of style she was going to feel the most beautiful wearing. And it took a few months before I envisioned her being a rich, shiny, gorgeous brunette. I think it is the best color for her and gives us a lot of room to work with and add to. Oribe had a major impact on me when I had the honor of working next to him while he styled Cait for Vanity Fair. He's the first person I shared her looks with and my go-to for hair inspiration."

Did Caitlyn have any major preferences when it came to creating her look? "Cait has always loved long hair. Her whole life people were constantly telling her to cut her hair. Long hair is more than just a look; it's a feeling. I have put Cait's hair up, pulled it back on the sides, or into a high ponytail depending on what the situation calls for. But mainly her daily hairstyle is a fresh look, softly curving around her face with fullness. It will work for anything she might be doing that day and will last through the night."

How do you style her hair? "I love doing a big blowout on Cait's hair. I recommend working with three to four different sizes of round brushes. I start at the hairline working one inch sections around the entire head—I use the smallest brush first and graduate up a size with each section. I concentrate on blowing the roots upward. I then finish with the biggest brush on the top of her head for maximum volume. I also set every section with Velcro rollers for a minimum of 30 minutes, taking out each roller and lightly back combing each section to build shape. I always finalize the look by adding volume to the ends with a smoothing brush."

How does Caitlyn usually do her hair when you’re not around to do it? "I got Cait her own styling tools specifically to help her style her hair herself. She will use a set of large hot rollers that heats up in eight seconds, which makes it quick and easy. One of my favorite tools I got her that make styling your own hair so effortless is an automatic curling iron, which she uses that to add loose waves for a daytime look. She is also stocked with all our favorite products. I must say, she does a pretty good job at styling her own hair."

What’s the environment like on set for her show? "For the show we have our morning glam routine. Her makeup artist Kip Zachary and I will discuss the type of look we are going to do that day and the fun begins! Between the three of us we always have 'glam gossip' to start off the day, This includes strong coffee, reading any new articles out loud to each other, and sharing makeup and hair tips. We joke around a lot so there's a constant laughter coming from our direction."

How risky does Caitlyn like to go with her hair? Do you think she will ever dye her hair a different color or try a unique haircut? "Cait is always up for trying out different looks. We still play with different lengths, and I think we always will. It's really exciting to work with somebody who's doing things for the first time. I think it's important to experiment so Cait can learn what her style is. I recently added some lighter tones for the summer, which was her idea."

You seem really close with her. How has working on Caitlyn’s hair changed your life? "Cait has changed my life in a bigger way than I could have ever styled her hair. We have spent a lot of time together and created a great friendship. To put it simply, I'm not the same person I was prior to meeting Cait—I am so much better."
